Steel Is Highly Recyclable
It is a little-known fact that steel is the most recyclable material on the earth. In 2014, 86% of steel was recycled, which exceeded the sum of paper, aluminum, plastic and glass. This may sound incredible, but when you consider some things about steel in real time, it really makes sense:
According to the statistics of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, only 14% of the plastic in the world is recycled. In contrast, the global paper recovery rate is 58%, and the steel recovery rate is 70% to 90%. Obviously, the recovery rate of steel is the highest.
Why does steel become the material with the highest recovery rate? There are several main reasons:
1. Magnetism of steel
Steel is the most easily recycled material in the world, mainly because of its magnetism. Magnetism makes it easy for the crusher to separate the scrap steel, so that the automobile disassembly enterprises can obtain profit returns, because the scrap steel circulation market is very mature.
2. Steel has amazing metallurgical properties
One of the greatest advantages of steel as a material is that it will not degrade when reused. This means that steel used in any capacity can be melted and used from one product to another without loss of performance.
3. Abundant scrap resources
There are many sources of scrap steel, which are divided into three categories by the industry:
Household waste - This is the steel recovered from the process occurring inside the factory. This is the procedure adopted by all steel plants, because all waste materials are reused in some way.
Factory scrap - excess material issued from bulk steel orders and returned to the factory for recycling. The unused instant waste is melted immediately and made into new products.
Obsolete waste - this may come from old products, garbage dumps, or even the reuse of obsolete military equipment. Four steel poles can be produced from the materials of a scrapped car.
4. Recycled steel has environmental benefits
Recycled steel has environmental benefits. Each ton of scrap steel used for steelmaking can reduce 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide, 14 tons of iron ore and 740 kg of coal. At present, we recover about 630 million tons of scrap steel every year, and can reduce nearly 945 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, more than 85%. Compared with the traditional process using iron ore and coal as raw materials, the production of steel products from scrap only consumes about one-third of the energy. Scrap is also an important raw material in the traditional blast furnace converter process. Adding scrap can absorb the excess energy in the converter steelmaking process and control the reaction temperature in the furnace.
Steel is one of the earliest recycled industrial materials
The standard procedure of any steel plant is to recover the scrap from the production of steel parts. Manufacturers have long learned that steel will not lose any strength when it is remelted and used for other purposes. Even pollutants such as paint and corrosion will not affect the inherent strength of steel. In 2020, the steel industry will recover enough steel from used cars alone to produce 16 million new cars. Although two out of every three tons of new steel are produced from recycled materials, it is still necessary to add primary metals in the process. The reason is that many steel vehicles and structures are often very durable and have a long service life, while the global demand for steel continues to grow.
In the future, we need to improve the use efficiency of materials by improving product design, manufacturing process, improving the sustainable use and reuse of products by consumers, and extending the service life of materials.
